| Almost one third (32%) of primary school entrants in Burundi drop out before grade 5. Far fewer children ever reach secondary school – just 13% of boys and 9% of girls in Burundi. The result is massive inefficiency. Children move through the system without reaching basic competencies in literacy and numeracy – let alone developing adequate capacities to negotiate their personal security or cope with their complex environments. The reason for children abandoning revolves mostly around the school environment, their psychosocial needs not being addressed, the lack of attention made by teachers and stigmatism against older children that had dropped out for several years and thus older than their classmates. These children return to unstable households were no support is provided and in urban areas begin their career on the streets. CARE Burundi will implement a three year project targeting out-of-school particularly vulnerable youth aged 12-18 in Ngozi province, which historically has the lowest education rates and highest drop-out rates , who are at risk of living an insecure life on the streets of Burundi. The project is based on a three-pronged strategy; knowledge enrichment, voluntary services and skills development. The goal is to address the needs of 250 out of school youth, particularly girls, to develop skills and capacities that will ensure a secure livelihood and help them become leaders of their community. Working together with three local NGOs ABUBEF, Tubiyage and RPA, CARE will establish a series of out-of-school activities for young girls and boys in urban Ngozi. Participants will complete an initial 6-month orientation program followed by a 3-month internship with a local institution / business. Participants will also be expected to volunteer their time in community outreach activities while participating in the training program. Outreach / awareness programs will be based on two primary themes: Human rights and democracy, and youth sexuality and reproductive health, with a focus on HIV/AIDS prevention. | |
