Moving Forward is a unique cross-sector project that addresses this critical component of emergency response by utilizing sport and games to help children and youth build their coping abilities and self-esteem, ultimately moving past the emergency to recovery and development. The Moving Forward toolkit is comprised of a manual that provides detailed information on program design, implementation and monitoring; an activity guide containing multiple examples of sport and play-related activities to assist mentors in devising and monitoring their activities; and a sport kit containing basic sport and game equipment for use in the activities.
To date, the Moving Forward project has been successfully piloted in Peru following the 2007 earthquake and in Kenya in response to post-election violence. This partnership with CARE Georgia would allow for implementation to take place in the Republic of Georgia’s city of Gori.
The project consists of a multi-day training to mentors in the emergency-affected communities, providing background understanding core psychosocial themes and their application through sport and play, how to facilitate structured sport and games with youth, and how to monitor and evaluate their program activities and outcomes. Following this training, mentors lead the program by facilitating sport and play activities in their communities during weekly sessions. A monitoring and evaluation phase at the conclusion. The project strives to build local capacity so that the curriculum can then be incorporated into longer-term programming. |
