| Project Name: | Livelihoods Recovery through Agriculture Programme (LRAP) |
| Project Description: | |
| The goal of Livelihoods Recovery through Agriculture Programme (LRAP) or informally known as Lirapa - which means home garden in Sesotho - is to improve the capacity of vulnerable rural households to cope with shocks and stresses, especially given the increasing impact of HIV/AIDS. The program targets 43,099 households in the districts of Mafeteng, Mohale's Hoek, Quthing and Quacha's Nek, which have been affected by HIV/AIDS and where nutritional status is declining. LRAP was jointly designed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MoAFS), CARE and DFID and supports initiatives that address both immediate and longer term needs of the most vulnerable households. In the four southern districts, the focus is on providing support to existing government and NGO initiatives to improve homestead productivity. It assists the Ministry to improve the effectiveness of the agricultural extension services at the national level, and develop and improve extension materials using the experience of the MoAFS, CARE, and other NGOs. The programme also undertook studies to increase understanding of the changing coping strategies and livelihoods of the most vulnerable households and results have informed Lesotho's Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper and its policy. | |
