Project Name:Cote D'Ivoire CIV011 Coping with Communal Violence: Building Alliance to Promote Reconciliation
Project Description:
In collaboration with Ivorian civil society organizations, CARE, proposes to launch an 18 month project to field-test and promote a practical community-based approach to conflict mitigation. This project is expected to benefit approx 50,000 persons, 10 CBO/NGO and 20 Communities in Western Region of Cote d'Ivoire (Man, Danane, Bangolo and Zouan Hounien, Guiglo). The proposed project will be implemented in three short phases. First, a series of village and neighborhood-level conflict assessments will increase understanding and promote dialogue about the patterns and causes of communal violence. Second, through a fund for small-scale projects, a series of local reconstruction and reconciliation initiatives will be rapidly conceived and executed. These community initiatives are intended to create a win-win situation, providing residents with a concrete material incentive to enter into dialogue with one another. Finally, in an effort to leverage nationwide impact, materials, lessons, and training opportunities from these locally focused pilot initiatives will be shared with national and international organizations operating in the country. The project's final phase will include a national meeting to discuss and promote community-based reconciliation, facilitation of round table discussions with government, NGO, donors and community leaders in order to effectively contribute to the national policy dialogue and framework for peace, and capacity building of national networks of Ivorian civil society organizations who will sustain reconciliation efforts beyond the timeframe of this project.
