Viable Initiative for the Development of Agriculture (VIDA) (MOZ032) (2001-9/2006)
This large project, financed mostly from the sale in Mozambique of wheat and vegetable oil donated by the
US Government, covers 14 districts in Nampula Province. VIDA's first phase began in 1997 and ended in September
2001. A second phase began in October 2001, with the goal of attaining a measurable increase in food security for
30,000 households. CARE expects that an additional 60,000 families will benefit indirectly from by adopting activities
and technology promoted by the project. Implementing partner CLUSA assists farmers to market crops through
associations, while CARE assists farmers to produce these crops. VIDA's market-oriented extension services
include providing considerable assistance to the private sector to help it establish seed production businesses and
retail outlets for agricultural tools and inputs. It offers crop production advice to about 45,000 direct beneficiaries
working in production and women's groups. VIDA also aims to improve the capacity of Ministry of Agriculture and
other stakeholders to perform key activities related to achieving food security, and to improve household food
consumption, especially for vulnerable children. As of September 2003, the project supported 1,260 groups of various types that had 54,692 members, including 19,077 women.
EU Cotton Diversification Program (PADZAM) (MOZ032) ( 2002-2004)
PADZAM is financed by the European Union through a grant to the Institute of Algodao (cotton) and works in
parts of three districts of Nampula Province (Erati, Monapo and Meconta). The project aims to assist cotton farmers
diversify the range of cash crops they grow, and is implemented in partnership with CLUSA and SODAN, a cotton ginning company. CARE is responsible for providing farmers with advice on the production of alternative crops and CLUSA on the marketing of these crops. SODAN leads project coordination and provides a market for some of the crops produced.
PADZAM works through producer associations originally formed by CARE, CLUSA and SODAN. In September 2003,
this project had 31 producer groups with 465 members.
Initiative for the Development of Murrupula (IDEMU) (MOZ032) (2002-2005)
IDEMU is one of two projects outsourced by the Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development using a loan
from the World Bank. The Ministry uses the loan to finance the provision of financial services to farmers in Murrupula
district by a consortium of NGOs and private companies (CARE, OLIPA, CLUSA and Agro Alfa). CARE assists farmer
association members to increase their output by providing production advice, and OLIPA helps associations market
their produce. CLUSA manages a loan guarantee fund and provides advice on organic farming and certification.
Agro Alfa, a private company, provides advice on animal traction, livestock production and agro-processing. In
September 2003, this project had 96 farmer associations with 3,840 members, half of whom were women.
Nampula Small Dam Construction (MOZ032) (2002-2003)
The aluminum smelter company MOZAL funds this small project, which aims to construct six small, earthen
dams using intensive labor methods. The dams are built in Erati, Nacaroa and Monapo Districts of Nampula Province.
The immediate aim is to provide employment for up to six hundred residents of the communities that will benefit from the dams, and a longer-term objective is to provide water for dry season irrigation of up to 50 hectares of food and cash crops. CARE planned this activity to increase food production and income. |
