Project Information

Project Name:Higiene Ambiental e Utilizacao Productiva de Agua (AUPA) - Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project in Northern Mozambique.
Project Description:
The project aim is to improve water supply and sanitation to rural people by developing technology options
of rural water supply systems to benefit large numbers of people and to respond to their demands assessing the
appropriateness of a range of technologies to offer significant improvements to those who do not and will not have access to conventional protected supplies in three year period. The main challenge is to find options that increase the effectiveness of the funds available for water supply and sanitation to rural people, combined with increasing sustainability of existing and future supplies. This requires not only technology but also approaches that remove the barriers denying poor people access to services on the one hand and enable poor people to promote their own
changes through livelihood security on the other. Target groups will be rural communities including those small
communities that gather small and isolated groups of houses that cannot afford conventional technological options at
the present time. An emphasis will be placed on cost reduction specially in areas where water lies within 10 meters of surface by reducing well diameters, greater involvement and training of the informal private sector (local artisans), testing low cost lifting devices for domestic use of water and agricultural production. Activities will be supported by HTN/RWSN based at SKAT in Switzerland that will provide advice for technology testing, local production and maintenance of low cost technologies. Training and capacity building of provincial and district government structures, Private Sector, local NGOs, CBOs and FBOs will be a major component to ensure that exist a support network that communities can addressed to improve access to and productive use of safe water and sanitation. Empowerment of women and the ability to replicate management structures and productive use of water will be stressed.
