This project operates in Maradi department where an unstable food supply translates into high rates of
protein-energy malnutrition and vitamin A deficiency. Dakoro District lies in an ecological transition zone, north of areas that receive enough rain to grow crops and south of dry-range livestock production areas. In Dakoro, both of these production systems are prone to failure. CARE provides support to 1,000 households, helping them analyze
and improve upon the strategies they have traditionally used to cope in this difficult environment. The project uses
participatory methods and includes dialogue between agriculturalists and pastoralists involved in conflicts over
access to natural resources. The project also helps communities identify and improve their own coping strategies, including migration. CARE implements all project activities through local partners.
