| Project Name: | Arlit Women's Project |
| Project Description: |
This project aims to increase women's capacity to improve the health of their families by creating savings
and credit groups in 30 communities. An emphasis is placed on improving the nutritional status of pregnant women
and children, and enabling women's groups to provide credit to address health needs and promote better health
practices in their communities. Project activities include the establishment and self-management of 100 selfsustaining
groups; health and nutrition training of village agents; distribution of vitamin A and iron tablets; and the
transfer of knowledge about the use of health services. Attention is also given to assisting group members with
investments in income generating activities (IGA). This project uses CARE's successful MMD methodology for
creating self-governing women's credit and savings groups, which depend solely on the resources they can mobilize
internally. The main difference in the women's groups created under this project is that an emphasis is placed on
using savings for health care purposes, as well as transferring knowledge about improved health practices and
providing technical assistance to increase the benefits derived from IGAs. As the possession of livestock is a key
determinant in the vulnerability level of a household, special attention will be given to helping women increase the benefit they derive from raising and marketing small livestock. |
