This Project is an extension of the Child Survival Project financed by USAID/BHR/PVC (1998-2002) that was carried out in the municipality of Matagalpa in the north central area of Nicaragua. The extension will increase the services to two more municipalities, La Dalia and Waslala and the departmental hospital in Matagalpa, Cesar Amador Molina. The project will be implemented in urban as well as rural areas of the three municipalities from October 2002 until September 30, 2007.
The goal of the project is to contribute to a 15% reduction of infant and maternal mortality in the department of Matagalpa, especially in these municipalities. The goal will be achieved through the following objective:
1. Better access and quality of maternal and infant health services in the public and private sectors of Matagalpa.
2. Better access and quality of maternal and neonatal health in the Matagalpa Hospital.
3. Strengthening of decision-making in the home that results in healthy behavior practices.
The project interventions include: Maternal attention/new born (50%); Nutrition (20%); Breastfeeding (10%); Management of pneumonia cases (10%) and control of diarrheal illnesses (10%). |
