Project Name:The CRADLE Support Project - Community Responsive Antenatal, Delivery and Life Essential Support for mothers and newborns in Nepal
Project Description:
The CRADLE (Community Responsive Antenatal, Delivery and Life Essential) Support for mothers and newborns in Nepal is a four year (Oct 2007 – Sept 2011) project funded by USAID/CSHGP. Total budget of the program $2,006,072 with $1,500,000 in USG funding and $506,072 in match. This program will be implemented in the Far Western Region (FWR) of Nepal in Kailali and Doti districts. Both districts are ranked in or near the bottom third of all 75 Nepali districts, according to the Human Development Index and Gender Development Index. The program will cover approximately 502 villages and 3 municipalities. Total and beneficiary populations for the two districts are: 31,163 Infants, 35,535 pregnant women, 227,614 women of reproductive age group from a total of 955,012 population.

The project aims for sustained improvements in maternal & neonatal (MN) health in the districts of Doti and Kailali thorugh: Improved maternal and neonatal outcomes; Improved maternal and neonatal services; Improved capacity of MOH and stakeholders for maternal and neonatal services; Improved viability for maternal and neonatal services; Improved community commitment for maternal and neonatal care; and Improved environment for maternal and neonatal care. Technical interventions will include: immunization (5%); nutrition (10%); HIV (5%); pneumonia case management (5%); control of diarrheal disease (5%); and maternal and newborn care (70%).

CRADLE is innovative both for the interventions it has packaged as well as its fundamental approach. The CRADLE program will apply, adapt and build upon new and promising approaches from India and Nepal for reducing neonatal and maternal mortality. CARE’s principle partners will be the district health offices, health facilities (HF), female community health workers (HW), NGOs and CBOs.
