The Kawsay project ("Life" in Quechua) for Quality and Equity in Intercultural Education in Puno aims to improve the quality of education for 7,900 Quechua-speaking children of primary school age in rural communities of the district of Azangaro, in the highlands of Southern Peru. The main activities include: drawing up and implementing regional policy proposals, including a participatory and decentralized mesocurricular proposal for intercultural education in the region; training teachers and Education Ministry officials to improve educational management; raising awareness in and training community leaders and parents on the intercultural, bilingural education proposal; and supporting the participation of local indigenous community representatives in local and regional education planning processes.
