Project Name:Quality and Equity in Intercultural Education in Puno (Kawsay)
Project Description:
The Kawsay project ("Life" in Quechua) for Quality and Equity in Intercultural Education in Puno aims to improve the quality of education for 7,900 Quechua-speaking children of primary school age in rural communities of the district of Azangaro, in the highlands of Southern Peru. The project will improve the pedagogical management of 280 teachers, as well as the management capacities of regional Education Ministry officials in the department of Puno, building on a successful pilot project, EDUBIMA, that developed and tested a curricular proposal for Intercultural, Bilingual Education together with teachers, officials and community members. The main activities include: drawing up and implementing regional policy proposals, including a participatory and decentralized mesocurricular proposal for intercultural education in the region; training teachers and Education Ministry officials to improve educational management; raising awareness in and training community leaders and parents on the intercultural, bilingural education proposal; and supporting the participation of local indigenous community representatives in local and regional education planning processes.
