| CARE Rwanda's Gisenyi Land and Environment Rehabilitation Project (GLER) aims to respond to short term conditions of increased degradation of the Gishwati forest as well as reduce chronic vulnerabiltiy of surrounding communities. CARE will work with 25,000 poor rural families to diversify their land use management skills and promote restoration and protection of this delicate natural resource. Agricultural and pastoral livelihoods that prevail in this area depend on the quality, diversity and sustainabiltiy of the Gishwati ecological system. The Gishwati forest area has been inundated with displaced people following the Goma volcano emergency. CARE will work in the most exposed areas of Mutura and Kanama districts to improve protection of the communities natural resource base. Local grass roots organisations will have technical and financial assistance to maintain soil protection practices and build awareness of this fragile environmental area. CARE will strengthen capacity with local authorities and organisations to prevent environmental crises and develop response strategies in the event of soil erosion, floods and land slides. |
