Project Information

Project Name:Condom Social Marketing Project
Project Description:
CARE's HIV/AIDS Condom Social Marketing Project is developed to reduce transmission of the AIDS virus
through increasing the availability and affordability of condoms and encouraging the adoption of healthy, low-risk
sexual practices. In collaboration with Population Services International and the National AIDS Secretariat, the
project has focused on launching and marketing a low-cost, high quality male condoms (the ''protector plus''), which
are distributed through both traditional and non-traditional channels, mainly through the private commercial sector.
The project is also raising awareness amongst men and women of reproductive age about sexually transmitted
diseases, particularly HIV, through a community-based communication campaign and the use of mass media. The
project is initially targeting the Western Area, especially Freetown, and plans to distribute 5 million condoms. CARE
has recently expanded the programme to the provinces where the main challenge is to establish an effective
distribution system in rural areas. The program also plans further activities to target more specific, high-risk groups
such as commercial sex workers, the armed forces and migrant populations.
