Project Name:Putland Health Partnership Program
Project Description:
Building on its successful formula of working in partnership with local women NGOs, CARE is proposing to implement a maternal health program that addresses the poor maternal health situation in Puntland. The final goal of the Puntland Health Partnership Programme (PHPP) is to improve the maternal health status of 18,000 people in ten target communities in Mudug, Nugal and Bari regions of Puntland through a twelve-month intervention. The proposed intervention will continue to work with communities in the Bari region who had implemented maternal health interventions under the Royal Netherlands funded NSPP, and expand maternal health activities into rural communities in the Mudug and Nugal regions. In addition to the beneficiaries reached during the life of the proposed project, the capacity of the Somali women-managed NGOs and rural communities to address maternal health needs will be improved. This will have a longer-term impact on the overall maternal health status in rural populations that have traditionally had limited access to basic maternal health services.Working with Somali women NGOs (WNGOs), CARE will expand the health services available to rural communities through MCH construction, increase awareness on MCH issues, provide capacity building support to local communities, organizations and civil authorities, and improve the technical skills of CHWs through additional training. Women-managed NGOs have proven in the past to be solid implementers, but due to the low status of women in Somali society, many WNGO staff have had only limited formal education and training.

Final Goal: To improve the maternal health status of 18,000 women in the ten target communities of the Mudug, Nugal and Bari regions of Puntland by the end of the programme. Intermediate Goal 1: Increased awareness and knowledge of maternal/child health issues within the target communities by the end of the programme period. Intermediate Goal 2: Increased capacity of the partner NGOs and community-based health workers to provide maternal/child health services by the end of the programme. Intermediate Goal 3: Increased access to maternal/child health services for 7,200 women in the Nugal and Mudug regions of Puntland by the end of the programme. Intermediate Goal 4: Improved linkages between WNGOs, health officials and the target communities in the Nugal, Mudug and Bari regions by the end of the programme. The project will meet these goals by supporting the efforts of the stakeholders to strengthen their programming and management capacity and by improving their linkages.
