Project Name:Protected Areas and Biodiversity Management in the Gissar Mountains as a model for strengthening the national Tajikistan Protected Areas System
Project Description:
CARE Tajikistan's Protected Areas and Biodiversity Management in the Gissar Mountains Project aims to improved conservation of globally significant biodiversity in Tajikistan through the demonstration of new mechanisms and approaches to effective management of three protected areas and their biological diversity. The project will also provide awareness of 101,000 individuals and improve quality of life of selected communities located next to the protected areas. Quality of life improvements will result from increased household income through selected alternative livelihood and resource use approaches selected on the basis of priorities for the rural communities in the project zone previously identified by local NGO’s and UNDP development partners. These include: social/community based joint forest management, livestock and pasture management, community based tourism, and sustainable energy developments. Through this project, CARE Tajikistan will provide technical assisstance to relevant government agencies and financial supprort to three protected areas and selected communities thus helping to improve protected areas management system, management of natural resources by population and thus help selected communities alleviate poverty.
