Project Information

Project Name:Tunza Mazingira Uongeze Mapato (TUMAUMA)
Project Description:
Kisulu district of Kigoma region in western Tanzania offers asylum to over 100,000 Congolese and Burundian refugees, representing one-fourth of the district's total population. CARE Tanzania has been active in the area since 1997 to assist the Government of Tanzania, UNHCR, refugees and implementing partners to manage the natural resources both refugees and nearby Tanzanian communities depend on in a sustainable manner. While CARE's (through its Kigoma Environmental Management Project) focus has been on managing natural resources within refugee camps, throughout the last two years, CARE has become increasingly aware of the critical need to address serious and related natural resource issues in neighbouring Tanzanian villages including soil erosion and low soil fertility, deforestation, and degredation of water resources.
