| Project Name: | Uluguru Mountains Environmental Management and Conservation Project |
| Project Description: |
| The Project Overall Goal is Sustainable conservation of the Uluguru Mountain forests with their associated locally, nationally and internationally significant biodiversity and water catchment values, while at the same time improving welfare of forest-adjacent communities. The project described in this proposal is a component of the Eastern Arc Forest Conservation and Management Programme which is a national programme supporting conservation of natural forests in Tanzania with particular emphasis on globally important biodiversity. This project is a site based initiative supporting environmental management and conservation of biodiversity in the Uluguru mountains where some of the most important areas of forest in the Eastern Arc are to be found. To be funded by the Global Environment Facility through UNDP, this project will pilot innovative approaches to conservation that will have impact both at the level of the Ulugurus and, through lessons learnt, at the broader scale of the Eastern Arc as a whole. Whilst the emphasis of GEF funding is globally important biodiversity, it is recognised that the Uluguru mountains have crucial importance at local, regional and national levels for a wide range of environmental values, most notably water supply, and the proposed project will also place strong emphasis on these environmental values. |
