Project Name:Income Smoothing Through Agricultural Marketing Interventions (ISAMI)
Project Description:
ISAMI is an innovative project that is designed to achieve increased and steady income for subsistence farmers in Kabale district, southwestern Uganda. The overall objective of the project is that; by the end of the project (60 months duration) there will be an "increased and steady income flow for at least 5,000 subsistence farmers, with total family members of 30,000". The project is to be implemented in partnership with Kabale District Farmers Association, (KADFA), Commercial Banks and Micro-Finance institutions, other Private Sector promoters, and farmer groups in Kabale District. The two components of the project will be an Inventory Credit (or Warehouse Receipting) System and a Savings and Loan Mechanism. The project approach will involve building of the capacity of participating banks and KADFA - a local Extension Service Providers (ESPs), to sustainably facilitate inventory credit (IC) and the savings & loans mechanisms (S&LM). The result at the micro level will be that participating farmers, particularly women, will have greater access to financial services, and will have improved access to viable storage and the market. At the meso level, at least one bank and one service provider will have the capacity to sustainably deliver services that will enable farmers to smooth their income. The impact of ISAMI at the macro level will be that fluctuations in the market will flatten for targeted commodities. The strengthened civil society in the form of farmers groups and ESP will also contribute to the macro development of the region.
