Project Name:Women's Empowerment for Peace (WEP)
Project Description:
Women’s Empowerment for Peace (WEP) is a three year (2007 – 2009) CARE Uganda Project that addresses challenges to women’s empowerment in the war-torn Pader district of Northern Uganda. Pader has been at the center of the 20-year Lord’s Resistance Army conflict and women have had to bear the brunt of it through various forms of violence, like abduction, maiming, rape, physical assault, forced early marriages, extreme trauma and abject poverty. This project primarily targets survivors of violence and trauma, formerly abducted women, child mothers, female-headed households, and victims/survivors of SGBV. It examines national and international mechanisms in place and the extent to which they are being implemented.

The overall objective is to enhance skills and capacities of women in conflict to exercise their rights by addressing the policy and cultural barriers that impede their empowerment and implementation of UN Resolution 1325 by 2009.

Expected results include:
- 12,000 women and girls affected by conflict developed capacity to claim and seek redress on rights;
- 5,000 women and girls, SGBV survivors and 1,500 men and boys have access to psychosocial assistance;
- Increased participation of women in decision making and increased incomes; Women leaders engaged in peace building processes through networks;
- Lessons learned regarding women’s rights attainments are documented and disseminated by CARE in collaboration with local partners and communities
