| Project Name: | Trade Promotion in Mali |
| Project Description: |
Working within the framework of the Government of Mali's Integrated Framework, this USAID-funded
project's efforts focus on ''Preparing Mali for the World'' by helping to develop a comprehensive national trade
strategy, establish a positive export-related enabling policy environment, increase awareness of regional and
international norms and standards, build efficient public and private trade promotion organizations, strengthen
negotiation and lobbying skills, integrate small stakeholders into mainstream export activities, increase access for women, strengthen association and agribusiness technical and management capacity, and strengthen agribusiness services at the Office du Niger. The project assists in linking Malian exporters and importers in regional and, to a more limited extent, international markets. Overall, the project will strengthen Mali's competitiveness through knowledge creation, networking, capacity building, and contributing to the resolution of policy and infrastructure constraints.
CARE Mali is a subcontractor to Chemonics, Inc., on this project. CARE's role is to integrate small-scale
stakeholders into the work of MaliTrade, thereby ensuring that vulnerable populations benefit from project activities.
CARE Mali will focus on working with small-scale associations, decentralizing management in Segou, Mopti, and
Timbuktu regions and providing high quality monitoring and evaluation services at the local level. These interventions
at the local level are intended to complement policy, technical assistance, and training activities aimed at national issues, government, and larger associations. CARE activities include: evaluating export potential and key
stakeholders (e.g., lead firms, producer groups, service providers including trade associations, transport services,
technical consultants and pertinent government services) in the proposed commodities, fostering commercial
linkages between leading firms and smaller producer groups or associations in the selected commodity, introducing
quality control systems by providing information and training on export market requirements, setting up basic
certification processes, and facilitating processing, storage, and other post-harvest infrastructure. |
