Protected Areas Management
CARE promotes community-based development activities in buffer-zone areas surrounding protected land of high ecological value. CARE integrated conservation and development activities include helping communities develop natural resource plans that allow farmers to strategically utilize resources over the long-term, while offering training in income-generating activities, such as ecotourism, controlled forestry and marketing of non-endangered forest products. These activities and others give participating farmers an immediate economic incentive for protecting and sustainably managing endangered areas. CARE currently operates 14 integrated conservation and development projects in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
In Ecuador, CARE's SUBIR Project is helping local NGOs and community groups to plan, startup and carry out buffer-zone conservation and development programs around the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve and the Yasuni National Park. With training and technical assistance from CARE, the participating NGOs have already created long-range operating plans and sought and received outside donor funding for their long-term operations. CARE's SUBIR Project also works with NGOs and community groups on policy and legal issues including land tenure; commercialization and marketing activities; and bio-diversity research and monitoring. CARE implements SUBIR in partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society, the two Ecuadorian foundations: EcoCiencia and Jatun Sacha.
