Relief Efforts in Mozambique

CARE began operations in Mozambique in 1986 with emergency assistance and food distribution for people who were affected by the protracted war between government and rebel forces.

From 1990 to 1994, CARE expanded its project portfolio to include disaster recovery and development activities. Following the end of the war in 1992, we shifted our focus to implementing long-term development projects in the following sectors: local water management, sanitation and hygiene, natural resource management and food security, health and HIV/AIDS, microfinance, and governance.

As part of our 2020 country strategy for Mozambique, CARE sought to fight poverty and improve food and nutrition security by empowering women and girls to exercise their rights. This strategy drew from CARE’s previous innovations and built on them – emphasizing in particular CARE’s expanded role as a facilitator and development partner with Mozambican colleagues from civil society who are likewise dedicated to transformative, rights-based development in collaboration with the private sector and government.

In March and April 2019, Southern Africa was hit by two subsequent cyclones that left a trail of destruction in their path, and close to 2.2 million people in need of urgent assistance in Mozambique alone. CARE immediately mounted a response that continues today, reaching hundreds of thousands of Mozambicans with household and shelter kits, hygiene kits, water and sanitation programming, food assistance, and programming to prevent gender-based violence and protection.
