People are arriving at refugee camps traumatized, injured and, most often, with nothing in hand. The need for shelter, bedding, clothes, food, water, cooking utensils as well as medical and mental care is great. And the situation is growing more dire by the day. Existing camps are overcrowded and host communities are being stretched to their limits by the influx.

CARE is on-the ground, working with local partners, to distribute tents for shelter as well as plastic floor mats, kitchen sets, shawls, hygiene kits and mosquito nets to families who have fled fighting in the Swat Valley.

We are also helping people access food, clean water and medical and psychological care, and helping people current living outside of the camps on their own or with host families.

As with all of our emergency response work, CARE is making a special effort to address issues that women and children often face during times of crisis.

Assessments of the camps indicate several areas of vulnerability: there are few female medical staff to treat women and girls, inadequate toilet facilities, not enough personal hygiene supplies, food that does not meet the nutritional needs of children and a large number of children who are displaying high levels of trauma, in particular when they hear loud noises like planes or helicopters flying overhead.
