On Tuesday, November 16, the world received the heartbreaking news that Mrs. Margaret Hassan, CARE's director in Iraq, had apparently been killed by her abductors.

She was taken on October 19 while on her way to work. This tragedy occurred despite an outpouring of support for her from the citizens of Iraq.

We are deeply saddened by this act and extend our heartfelt sympathy to Margaret's husband, siblings, and the people of Iraq, who lost one of their greatest champions.

We hope they find solace in Margaret's remarkable legacy of humanitarianism.

Margaret's humanitarian work helped the poorest Iraqis for 25 years. Working with CARE since 1991, Margaret assisted women and children with health care, rebuilt hospitals and provided water and sanitation services.

Margaret was an Iraqi, and a person who dedicated her life to helping others. She was well loved and deeply respected, and will be remembered for her courage and commitment to the people of Iraq.

Please use the space below to express your sympathy. Your comments will be shared with Margaret's colleagues around the world.
