In late September, the global community will come together at the Millennium Development Goals Summit in New York. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a set of eight international development objectives agreed upon by world leaders in 2000, comprehensively address the underlying causes of extreme poverty. Heads of states and organizations alike are hoping that the MDG Summit will be a turning point in the collective efforts to achieve the MDGs by the target deadline of 2015. The clock is ticking.

CARE's leadership will be actively engaged at the MDG Summit, working with both governments and partners to accelerate progress on the MDGs, specifically those goals that are closely linked to CARE's longtime work around the globe. These goals include eradicating extreme poverty and hunger; promoting gender equality and empowering women; improving maternal, new-born and child health; and ensuring environmental sustainability.

CARE has been working in the poorest communities in over 72 countries for 65 years. We know firsthand that women are critical to ending poverty. Women are at the heart of our efforts because experience shows that a woman's achievements yield dramatic benefits for her entire family and the larger community.
