Indonesia Quake May 2006

Situation: The Indonesian island of Java was struck by a powerful earthquake in May 2006, which left as many as 1.5 million people homeless. The earthquake’s destruction is much worse than that resulting from the December 2004 tsunami in Indonesia’s Aceh province. Besides claiming nearly 6,000 lives and injuring over 37,000 more, assessments estimate that the quake destroyed or severely damaged as many as 400,000 homes, schools and businesses.

Our Response: CARE’s focus is in the rural area of Klaten — one of the hardest-hit and hardest-to-reach locations — where we are providing 20,000 survivors with water purifier, food and other emergency supplies like tarps, tents, blankets, sleeping mats, basic medicine and hygiene kits. In all, CARE will provide water purifier to some 40,000 households (approximately 200,000 people) in the devastated region — to prevent water-borne diseases that commonly occur after such disasters — as well as train them on how to make water safe for drinking.
