Southern Africa

Situation: Some 10 million people in southern Africa face severe food shortages in the coming months. After four years of unreliable rains, families in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe have exhausted ways to cope with poor harvests — like selling livestock to buy food. Now, they don't have any resources to fall back on.

Our Response: CARE estimates that about 700,000 tons of emergency food is needed immediately to help families survive until the next harvest. We're helping farmers diversify their crops to include drought-resistant cassava and sorghum. But it's still going to take a massive effort to stop this new crisis before it starts. With your help, we can make a difference!

Take a stand in the fight against poverty.
When disaster strikes, when poverty threatens lives, CARE is there. With staff on the ground in 66 countries, we can respond quickly — with the right kind of help. And we stay after the crisis has passed, to resume and expand our poverty-fighting work. Want to be a part of the solution?
