Chicago Teen Develops Coloring Book to Raise Donations for CARE Honduras

Honduras coloring book
After visiting a Tegucigalpa garbage dump where children dig through trash to find things to eat or recycle rather than go to school, Kaelyn Malkoski, 17, decided that she needed to share what she saw with other American children. Upon returning to her suburban Chicago home, Kaelyn set out to create a coloring book to illustrate the lives of the children from the dump in order to raise awareness and understanding of how millions of children around the world live everyday. Through the coloring book, she hopes to raise $10,000 to support the education in Honduras. The coloring book, appropriate for ages 5-11, not only serves as a meaningful gift for children but a starting point for discussing important and challenging global issues with them.

HALF THE SKY Live

Thousands gathered across the country to celecrate International Women's Day with CARE at HALF THE SKY Live, a special one-night-only event in movie theatres.

Inspired by moving stories from the critically-acclaimed book "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide" by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, HALF THE SKY Live featured an uplifting night of music, celebrity discussion and the world premiere of "Woinshet," a powerful short film directed by Academy Award® winner Marisa Tomei and Lisa Leone that chronicles the struggles of an Ethiopian woman who triumphs over violence and discrimination.    

The evening featured appearances by India.Arie, Maria Bello, Michael Franti, Dr. Helene Gayle, Angelique.Kidjo, Nicholas Kristof, Andrea Mitchell, Marisa Tomei, Sheryl WuDunn and other notables.

Featured on Oprah, CNN, and Dateline NBC, "Half the Sky" remains a New York Times best seller and a critical favorite across the globe. Tom Brokaw says the book's stories about real women "will pierce your heart and arouse your conscience."

A POWERFUL NOISE Live
March 5, 2009

In celebration of International Women's Day, CARE and NCM Fathom – in partnership with ONE and the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women – presented A POWERFUL NOISE Live in more than 450 theatres nationwide. The evening began with a screening of the acclaimed documentary "A Powerful Noise." This remarkable film features three inspiring women, who overcome daily challenges to achieve significant victories over poverty and oppression. Immediately following the film, former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright, CARE Advocate Christy Turlington Burns, Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof, actress and activist Natalie Portman and CARE President and CEO held a town hall discussion that was broadcast live into each theatre. The film's executive producer Sheila C. Johnson was on hand to make a special announcement!

CARE Advocacy Coordinator Suzanne Berman at Northwestern University's 6th Annual Conference, "Humanitarian Aid: Sovereignty, Accountability and Effectiveness"

Undergraduates, nonprofit workers, policy makers and academics gathered at the 2009 Northwestern University Conference on Human Rights to examine the complexities behind humanitarian initiatives. Although human rights standards and the promise of a better life are implicit in the humanitarian principle, human rights violations can nevertheless occur when aid is misapplied and mishandled.

Open Sing for CARE
July 2, 2008
Church Epiphany

The Church Epiphany hosted an Open Sings series for CARE on July 2, launching their annual Festival of Open Sings. Singers and instrumentalists will gather at 7 p.m. for a 45-minute rehearsal. A long-time CARE supporter then will talk to the group for about 5 minutes before refreshments. Finally, everyone returns to the sanctuary and the group sings straight through without stopping.

Chicago Sky vs. Washington Mystics

CARE supporters enjoyed family fun, inspiring role models and thrilling basketball at the WNBA Chicago Sky CARE Night on Friday, June 13 when the Sky took on the Washington Mystics. A portion of ticket proceeds will be donated to CARE.


Special Preview Screening of A Powerful Noise

Executive Producer and CARE Ambassador Sheila C. Johnson and actress Sharon Lawrence hosted a special preview screening of the new documentary feature A Powerful Noise on May 21 at the Gene Siskel Film Center. This inspiring documentary follows three extraordinary women — in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Mali and Vietnam — as they overcome barriers to lead day-to-day battles against ignorance, poverty, oppression and ethnic strife.
