In 1946, thousands of Americans came together to support a new charity called CARE. By sending packages of food to Europe for survivors of World War II, these early supporters helped avert famine on the war-torn continent.
Sixty years later, CARE is a global organization, reaching 48 million people in 70 countries in our fight against poverty. As one of the first large-scale international charities in the United States, we have brought hope and opportunity to countless families and have served as a model of how U.S. citizens can help people in poor communities around the world.
The Celebration
CARE's anniversary celebration is an annual event held in Washington, D.C. On May 17, 2006, we'll bring together members of Congress, the presidential administration and diplomatic community with civic leaders and corporate sponsors to celebrate CARE's work and raise the important funds that make our work possible. Dozens of ambassadors will open their homes for private dinners, followed by dessert and dancing at the CARE Ball at the Organization of American States, Hall of the Americas. Music will be provided by Radio King Orchestra, Washington's most elegant swing band.
The theme "Power. Progress. Possibilities." highlights the key role women play in the fight against global poverty. Recognizing that women and children suffer disproportionately from poverty, CARE places special emphasis on working with women to create permanent social change. Equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities out of poverty.
This year's Anniversary Co-chairs are Franki Roberts, wife of Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS); Diane Nelson, wife of Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE); Debbie Dingell, wife of Rep. John Dingell (D-MI); Lynne Pace, wife of General Peter Pace; and Shirley Robinson Hall. His Excellency the Ambassador of India and Mrs. Ronen Sen will serve as International Chairs. The Congressional Club, a non-partisan setting for friendships among the spouses of House and Senate members, is the event's National Partner; the president of the Club is Vicki Tiahrt, wife of Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-KS).
Please join CARE in commemorating 60 years of humanitarian service around the world. You have the power to make real progress and create new possibilities in the fight against global poverty. Start today.
