In 1946, thousands of Americans came together to support a new charity called CARE. By sending packages of food to Europe for survivors of World War II, these early supporters helped avert famine on the war-torn continent.
More then 60 years later, CARE is a global organization, reaching 55 million people in over 60 countries in our fight against poverty. As one of the first large-scale international charities in the United States, we have brought hope and opportunity to countless families and communities around the world.
The Anniversary Celebration
CARE's anniversary celebration is an annual event held in Washington, D.C. On May 16, 2007, we'll bring together members of Congress, the presidential administration and the diplomatic community with civic leaders and corporate sponsors to celebrate CARE's work and raise the important funds that make our work possible. Dozens of ambassadors will open their homes for private dinners.
On May 17, 2007, International Chair Ambassador Carolina Barco of Colombia will host the Diplomatic Celebration. This invitation-only event honors not only the Diplomatic Corps and the international relationships that make CARE's work possible, but also recognizes the importance of corporate philanthropy and social responsibility in our fight against global poverty. CARE's honorees for the evening are Washington Mystics owner Sheila C. Johnson, for her tremendous support and contributions to CARE, and Oscar award-winning actress Mary Steenburgen, for her dedication to global humanitarian issues. With Latin-inspired flavors and sounds, the evening will certainly be exciting and worthwhile.
This year's theme, "A Powerful NOISE: The impact of one voice. The power of many," is about the collective power we all have to make a real difference in the world. It's about raising our voices together to defend dignity and fight global poverty. It's also about helping poor women find their own voices and realize their potential to change the world around them. Together with CARE, poor women are working to improve education, health and economic opportunities for their families and communities.
This year's Celebration co-chairs are Franki Roberts, wife of Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kans.; Dr. Susan Blumenthal, wife of Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass.; Lynne Pace, wife of General Peter Pace; and Annie Totah, human rights activist and philanthropist.
We could not be more honored to have Her Excellency, Carolina Barco, the Ambassador of Colombia, serve as International Chair. Not only is she the first International Chair to represent a Latin American country, but as Colombia's former foreign minister, she embodies what it means to be an empowered woman. We look forward to standing together with her, CARE Ambassador Sheila Johnson and Mary Steenburgen to make a powerful statement about the importance of women helping poor women around the world rise above extreme poverty.
Please join CARE in commemorating 61 years of humanitarian service around the world. Together, we can make real progress in the fight against global poverty. Let's start today.
