photo25 25. For nine months during the war, this apartment building in Kuito was in the line of fire. Those who couldn't flee were held captive in their homes. Today the same shell of a building is the only home available to scores of families who returned after the fighting stopped.
photo26 26. Former soldiers often struggle to adjust to life after the war. Many returned to find their homes destroyed, their families lost, and employment scarce. This former MPLA (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola) soldier lives in an abandoned building in Kuito with 30 other displaced veterans.
photo27 27. Joao Barrows, a Angolan CARE staff member, holds a child from a displaced persons' camp south of Kuito. He is one of 9,500 CARE national staff members worldwide who are helping improve the well-being of their countries.
