In mid-November, Indonesia activated two specialized buoys and an undersea pressure sensor as part of a five-year plan to create a comprehensive tsunami warning system. Nearly a year before, a devastating killer wave came ashore, taking the lives of more than 250,000 people throughout the region.
Even as officials prepare for the possibility of another disaster, CARE continues our comprehensive response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. We're working hard to turn this tragedy into an opportunity — a chance to build safer homes, create better jobs and foster stronger communities. Millions of people affected by the tsunami are working each day to rebuild. They need our continued attention, support and commitment, which is why CARE will continue our efforts in the tsunami zone for at least four more years.
CARE has prepared a comprehensive report for the first anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami, which includes updates on each country where CARE is responding. Download your copy and learn more about what has been accomplished thus far, and what remains to be done.
