ATLANTA (November 13, 2006) - In time for the holiday season, Borders, Borders Express and Waldenbooks stores nationwide will exclusively carry the 2007 "I am Powerful" CARE calendar, allowing customers the opportunity to give the perfect gift this holiday season — a gift that gives more.
Regularly priced at $11.99, Borders, Inc. and Walden Book Company, Inc., subsidiaries of global book, music and movie retailer Borders Group, Inc. (NYSE:BGP), will donate $2 of the profits for every calendar sold in its stores to CARE, an international poverty-fighting organization that places special emphasis on working with women to create permanent social change. To find the nearest Borders or Waldenbooks store, visit www.bordersstores.com.
Each month of the calendar features a breathtaking image of women and girls in Nepal, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Nicaragua, India, Sri Lanka and more. The women are among those supported through CARE's community-based programs to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources.
Borders and Waldenbooks partnered with CARE during the spring 2005 "Reading is Magic" campaign. During this campaign, the net proceeds from the sales of the $2 "Reading is Magic" wristbands ($1.60 per wristband), created especially for this program, were donated to CARE. In total, Borders Group, Inc., donated more than $750,000 to CARE.
"CARE is excited to again team with Borders Group to generate awareness and support for our work in empowering women and girls in the world's poorest countries," said Deborah Neuman, senior vice president for CARE. "By purchasing the I Am Powerful calendar, customers will help make a difference in the fight against global poverty and support CARE's important work in empowering women and girls, who make up 75 percent of the world's poorest people."
"I have seen first hand the work that CARE does and am thrilled that we are once again joining with them in an effort to combat global poverty," said Michael Tam, chief marketing officer and senior vice president for Borders Group, Inc., who visited CARE programs in Guatemala. "At Borders and Waldenbooks, we are committed to offering our customers the most relevant assortment of titles, allowing our customers to find the perfect gift for this holiday season. By carrying the CARE calendar and donating a portion of our profits from its sales to CARE, we are providing those who shop with us and purchase the calendar, the chance to make their holiday giving even more meaningful this year."
