Non-governmental organizations are meeting in Tbilisi to determine the possible scale of a humanitarian response to the war in South Ossetia in Georgia. CARE staff are aware already of more than 6,000 displaced people, some seeking help in Georgia and others who have fled into Russia. CARE is working with the United Nations, Save the Children, World Vision and other humanitarian organizations to determine what can be done to provide medical supplies, food, water, shelter and other basic necessities in the midst of conflict. CARE has worked in Georgia since 1992, initially providing humanitarian assistance to IDPs, and later working in the sectors of community development, small business development, and good governance. Currently CARE Georgia has approximately 70 national and expatriate staff in the country working in the southern and eastern parts of Georgia.
