CARE CEO Helene D. Gayle Named Recipient of the Ivan Allen Jr. Award for Progress and Service

ATLANTA (March 9, 2009) - The Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at Georgia Tech has named Helene D. Gayle, President and CEO of CARE, as recipient of the 2009 Ivan Allen Jr. Award for Progress and Service. Gayle will accept the award during the College's annual Founder's Day celebration which takes place Thursday, March 12, 2009 in the Georgian Ballroom at the Biltmore. Gayle's address at 1:00 p.m. is free and open to the public.

An internationally recognized expert on health, development and humanitarian issues with a lifelong commitment to social justice and equity, Gayle is the ninth Georgia-affiliated leader to receive the Ivan Allen Jr. Award for Progress and Service. Also presented during the Founder's Day program will be Ivan Allen Jr. Legacy Awards to faculty, student, and alumnus who exemplify the spirit of civic leadership personified by Mayor Allen, and the winner of the Ivan Allen Jr. Essay Contest for high school seniors.

"Throughout her career, Dr. Gayle has been a catalyst for improving the human condition," said Sue V. Rosser, Dean of the Ivan Allen College. "Her endeavors embody the leadership, optimism, and force for progress that are the hallmark of the Ivan Allen Jr. Award for Progress and Service." 

Gayle has been CARE's chief executive since April 2006, guiding the organization's efforts to end poverty through programs in more than 70 countries around the globe. Previous to that, she directed the HIV, TB, and Reproductive Health Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She also spent 20 years with the Centers for Disease Control, focused primarily on combating HIV/AIDS.

The Ivan Allen Jr. Award for Progress and Service has been awarded annually since 2001 to a Georgia-affiliated leader who works in a field relevant to the academic disciplines of the Ivan Allen College. Previous recipients of the award are Ted Turner, philanthropists Charles and Lessie Smithgall, civil rights advocate Jesse Hill, electronic gaming luminary Will Wright, former U.S. Senator Sam Nunn, syndicated columnist Molly Ivins, former President Jimmy Carter and former Governor and U.S. Senator Zell Miller.
