Statement from CARE's Dr. Gayle on Outcome at Copenhagen

COPENHAGEN (December 20, 2009) - CARE President and CEO Dr. Helene D. Gayle released the following statement after the conclusion of the U.N. Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen:

For poor people struggling to adapt to climate change and fighting to preserve forests, the promise of Copenhagen was as a conference of commitments. And indeed there were some historic – though far from sufficient first steps. Heading into 2010, the urgent challenge for world leaders and bodies such as the U.S. Senate is to finish the deal, push beyond "should" and "would" and give the world what it desperately needs: political "will." Until then, people whose very lives depend on fast action are no better off and Copenhagen remains a promise half-fulfilled.
