CARE Endorses Obama Administration's International Affairs Budget

Poverty-Fighting Group Applauds Focus on Women, Girls

WASHINGTON (February 4, 2010) - CARE strongly endorses the Obama administration's FY 2011 International Affairs budget request, which would increase investments in maternal and child health, food security, and climate change – all while placing women and girls at the core of U.S. foreign assistance programs.

CARE firmly believes that by investing in women and girls we are more successful at reaching the families and communities that stand behind them. While we recognize the challenging economic climate and the significant constraints it has imposed on the current budget, we believe that we must continue to strategically invest in programs that improve the human condition and strengthen our fight against global poverty

"Tough times call for greater efficiency in government," said CARE President and CEO Dr. Helene D. Gayle. "And with this budget, the Obama administration signals that it understands the value of our most effective, cost-effective weapon in the war against poverty: women and girls. We at CARE look forward to working with the administration and Congress to ensure this wise investment is finalized in this year's budget."

This leadership, in combination with the reforms and restructuring of US foreign assistance, will allow all of us to share the best of the United States with those who need our help most. CARE stands ready to work with the administration and the Congress to ensure these poverty fighting investments are enacted in this year's budget.
