Summary
For those receiving late-night calls from 402-982-0436 soliciting donations for CARE’s work in Haiti, please know that these are not legitimate calls from CARE. This is not a phone number used by CARE, and we have launched an investigation to determine the origin of these calls.
What Happened
On February 22, CARE received a number of complaints from individuals who had received calls the previous evening between 11:30 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. The calls originated from a number that is not used by CARE (402-982-0436), and the automated message advised donors to contribute to CARE’s earthquake relief work in Haiti. Callers were understandably irate about being awakened to receive a perceived CARE solicitation. At the same time, similar complaints appeared on social networking and call-lookup websites.
CARE’s Response
CARE immediately confirmed that these calls did not originate from a CARE-owned number and launched an investigation. We are working with state and local law enforcement officials and taking appropriate steps to ensure that no additional fraudulent calls are made.
We Value You
CARE’s donors and supporters are the organization’s greatest asset. We are taking this situation seriously, and we encourage you to contact us (info@care.org) if you have questions about any communications from CARE. Thank you for your interest in and support of CARE.
