Kristin Kalla Director, Communities Responding to the HIV/AIDS Epidemic (CORE) Initiative, a USAID-funded consortium headed by CARE

Kalla, previously director of CARE’s HIV/AIDS unit, has more than 13 years of experience developing community-based multi-sectoral HIV/AIDS interventions, youth programming, communications and behavior change, workforce policy and training. Before coming to CARE, Kalla worked for UNICEF in Ethiopia, with the Ministry of Health in Rwanda, and in post-conflict settings with Islamic Relief in Kosovo and Relief International in Tajikistan. She has also served as a Program Officer with the World Health Organization's Global Tuberculosis Program in Geneva. As a consultant, Kalla worked for non-governmental organizations in Egypt, New York, and with the Inter-African Committee/Geneva where she developed materials on reproductive health, gender and harmful traditional practices.

Madhu Deshmukh Acting Director, HIV/AIDS Unit

Madhu Deshmukh has worked in the area of HIV/AIDS for 12 years. She has helped design HIV/AIDS strategic plans, training materials, and program guidelines for governments, nonprofit groups, and private industry in the Asia region and the United States, with a specific focus on rights and gender. She has worked with the National AIDS Control Organization in India, the United Nations Development Programme, UNAIDS, and the UK's Department for International Development. Prior to joining CARE, Deshmukh worked as a consultant for the UN and organizations including CARAM ASIA, Family Health International (FHI), and Deepak Charitable Trust (DCT).

Deshmukh can tell you about:

Dr. Smarajit Jana CARE India Assistant Country Director
Delhi, India

As Assistant Country Director for CARE in India, Dr. Smarajit Jana is specializing in HIV/AIDS, health and development. He works closely with CARE sector and regional program directors as well as with counterparts in the Indian government, donors and partner organizations. Before joining CARE in 1999 he worked as a medical inspector, epidemiologist and a professor of occupational health. He has served as both the HIV and Health Program coordinator for CARE in Bangladesh, overseeing programs ranging from reproductive health and safe motherhood to programs working with commercial sex workers and transport, dock and port workers to prevent the spread of HIV. Dr. Jana was instrumental in forming a partnership with transportation unions and developing the country’s first HIV-positive support network. He holds a bachelors of science degree and a medical degree in social and preventive medicine from Calcutta University. He also has studied epidemiology at the John Hopkins University, the University of Michigan and the University of Washington. Among his many published works is a handbook for the design and management of HIV/AIDS prevention and care programs in resource constrained settings, published by FHI in Washington. In 1999, Dr. Jana received India’s National Public service excellence award for his research and innovative sexual health programs.

Phoebe Kilele East and Central Africa Regional Co-ordinator, CORE Initiative

Phoebe Kilele’s work experience has centered on designing, managing and providing technical assistance on health and HIV/AIDS; strengthening community groups; and managing grants. She has worked for CARE in Rwanda and Somalia, partnering with local organizations in designing, implementing, and monitoring HIV/AIDS programs. Kilele has also worked with ACTIONAID in Kenya for about seven years on health and development projects and close to nine years for the Ministry of Health in Kenya as a Nursing and Public Health Education Officer. She is a candidate for a master in Public Health and Epidemiology and is a Kenya Registered Nurse and Midwife.

Dan Mullins HIV/AIDS Coordinator for Southern and West Africa

Dan Mullins, based in Johannesburg, oversees CARE's regional AIDS initiatives in Southern and West Africa. Mullins helps CARE integrate HIV/AIDS strategies into all aspects of our work with communities, such as agriculture, education and income-generation, as well as promote HIV/AIDS initiatives in the workplace. Mullins has more than 19 years experience in both Anglophone and Lusophone Africa. His long-term experience has been in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Swaziland, and Mozambique, and he has worked in several other countries in Southern Africa.

Dr. Muhammad Musa Deputy Regional Director for Asia
Bangkok, Thailand

Dr. Musa, a 20-year health and development veteran, is based in Bangkok, where he helps to oversee programming across Asia as Deputy Regional Director. Dr. Musa holds a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University and has extensive experience combating HIV/AIDS. He has been held a variety of positions with CARE during his 20-year career and has been particularly involved in HIV/AIDS programming across Asia and Africa, instituting CARE’s first program focused on HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia.
