CARE and Sierra Leone: Quick Facts
- CARE established its office in Sierra Leone in 1961 and initially focused on improving child nutrition through school feeding programs.
- During the late 1960s and the 1970s, CARE helped to link up isolated rural communities through infrastructure programs that either built or repaired bridges and drainage canals on secondary roads.
CARE continues to provide emergency assistance to people affected by the ongoing civil conflict.
Along with emergency relief programs, CARE's projects now concentrate on improving agricultural yields, water quality, sanitation facilities and primary health care services.
CARE's programs in Sierra Leone are supported by the European Union, the United States Agency for International Development, the United Kingdom's Department for International Development and Norway's Ministry of Foreign Affairs support.
