Altiplano
The Altiplano is the name of the upland plateau (alt. c.12,000 ft/3,660 m) in the Andes
of Bolivia and Peru.
Corn, wheat, and potatoes are the chief crops; mining is the
principal industry. La Paz and Oruro, in Bolivia, are
the largest cities.
La Paz
The administrative capital of Bolivia
since 1898, La Paz
is Bolivia's largest city and its commercial center. Manufactures include
clothing and processed food. Situated in a narrow Andean river valley at an
elevation of c.12,000 ft (3,660 m), it is the highest capital city in the
world. It was founded in 1548 and was a key point on colonial trade routes.
Tourist attractions in the area include Lake Titicaca and the subtropical Yungas region.
Titicaca
The largest freshwater lake in South America, (c.3,200 sq mi/8,290 sq km),
located high in the Andes between Bolivia and Peru,
at an elevation of c.12,500 ft (3,810 m). It is the highest navigable
lake in the world. The densely populated shores have been a center of
civilization on the Altiplano since before the time
of the Incas.
