CARE has worked in Ecuador since 1962, empowering poor families and communities to sustainably improve their lives.

CARE believes that a holistic understanding of the problems facing the urban and rural poor is essential in order to provide focus to the organization's poverty alleviation programs, and increase their success and sustainability.

CARE's work aims to help people meet all their basic needs, including food and nutrition, education, health care, water and sanitation, housing, community participation, environmental protection and economic stability and opportunity. CARE projects are designed to promote social equality. The organization strives to replicate successful experiences and plan for the long-term.

CARE works in partnership with local leaders and organizations in order to expand impact and promote the exchange of knowledge and expertise.

CARE programs in Ecuador total about $6.5 million each year.

CARE's Main Activities in Ecuador:

  • Integrated Conservation and Development (ICD): Programs that encompass human development and environmental conservation. This includes support to local and national governments in their efforts to develop policies that promote sustainable environmental practices;
  • Water, Sanitation, and Environmental Health: Programs that address overall water needs, including safe drinking water, hygiene and sanitation and protection of watersheds;
  • Economic Development: Programs to support the development of small money-making activities that can create jobs; and advocate for changes in the use of the rural land to increase productivity;
  • Health: Programs that strengthen the management and financing of health services, allowing them to be more successful, sustainable, replicable and innovative;
  • Emergencies: Provision of relief -- including food, tools, health services and longer-term rehabilitation -- for victims of natural disasters.

CARE has a staff of 160 in Ecuador -- 155 are Ecuadorian nationals. CARE's main office is in the capital, Quito, but several satellite offices are located throughout the country in closer proximity to program sites.
