Meet the CARE Youth Corps 2001 Team


Elizabeth Addison, 16
Rich East High School

Addison
Elizabeth, in addition to being a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society and the student government, has been selected to participate in the Future Leaders of Chicago program organized by the Chicago Community Trust.

She has studied Spanish for three years and also has traveled to Spain. Elizabeth hopes to one day become a doctor in South America and feels that the CARE Youth Corps experience, "will further encourage and motivate me."

What does Elizabeth feel she will bring to the program? "I will bring creativity, dedication, hard work, compassion and friendliness," she says. "I will give my all and more to do the best I can in everything."


Becky Banc, 16
Maine South High School

Banc
Becky has studied Spanish since the seventh grade and wants to participate in Youth Corps because, "helping people is my passion," she says. She has been a member of her church's orchestra for six years and has been playing the violin for seven years.

As to what Becky will contribute to this year's program, "I will bring compassion and an open heart to the group, so together we can help make Peru a better place," she says.


Sylvia Gonzalez, 17
Senn High School

Gonzalez
Sylvia is a member of the International Baccalaureate program at her high school and a Spanish honors student. She is extremely active with her volunteer activities at St. Mary's Hospital and Casa Central, a senior citizens' home located in Chicago.

Who is Sylvia? "I'm outgoing, trustworthy and very hard working," says Sylvia. "I'm always energetic and very optimistic."


Sophie Grimes, 16
Francis W. Parker High School

Grimes
Sophie has always been concerned about social injustices. Earlier this year, she participated in the National Association of Independent School's People of Color Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, where she met with students from across the United States to talk about the effects of racism, sexism and ageism in our society.

She has studied Spanish for five years and has traveled to Costa Rica and Mexico with her family. Sophie, a self-described dreamer, also sees herself as "quirky and sensitive."

Sophie is clear about her mission for this trip. She says, "I will give as much as I can, and will try to enjoy what I learn from every moment."


Berenice Hernandez, 16
James H. Bowen High School

Hernandez
Berenice is extremely active in her community and spends most of her time helping others. In addition to her volunteer work at the Juan Diego Community Center, where she assists HIV/AIDS patients, Berenice offered her time to the Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation during a recent telethon. She also has volunteered for a local community development organization that transforms vacant lots into parks.

Why does Berenice want to participate in the CARE Youth Corps? "I want to participate in the CARE Youth Corps program because I know it will be a great experience and I know I will be making a difference in people's lives, as well as my own."


Isley Markman, 16
The Latin School of Chicago

Markman
Isley is a "driven, motivated and dedicated person." This is evident in her extra-curricular activities. When she's not leading the Latin field hockey team to victory, you can find Isley focusing on her editorial duties at the school newspaper or organizing the school prom.

Isley is eager to participate in the CARE Youth Corps program. She says, " I feel that this program will give me the opportunity to see the world from a new perspective. I have a strong desire to make a difference in the world."


Tiana Pyer-Pereira, 16
The Latin School of Chicago

Pyer-Pereira
Tiana describes herself as "creative, curious, enthusiastic, optimistic and interested in others." She has volunteered for several local organizations, including a nursing home, a library and a daycare, as well as for the AIDS Walk. She has been a member of band and chorus for six years and says she has been writing for as long as she can remember.

What will Tiana bring to the program? Tiana says, "I hope to bring an eagerness to learn and a strong mind."


Taylor Stern, 16
Francis W. Parker High School

Stern
Taylor has worked on her school's yearbook since the eighth grade. She has spent three weeks during three summers volunteering at the El Valor center in Pilsen, a southwest Chicago neighborhood, working with a daycare program for children who speak only Spanish. She also has traveled to Madrid, Spain.

When asked why she would like to participate in CARE Youth Corps Taylor says, "I would like to participate in the program because I think it's important for teens to get involved and see the world."


Jennifer Washington, 17
The Latin School of Chicago

Washington
Jennifer has been a member of the Black Student Union for four years. She has volunteered at the Ariel Foundation for a year and has worked as a student administrative aide at Fantus Health Center, a division of Cook County Hospital in Chicago. Jennifer also has been a member of the track and field team for three years.

Jennifer has taken four years of Spanish and went on a school trip to Morelia, Mexico for two weeks in 1998.

"I want to participate in the CARE Youth Corps program because I enjoy participating in community service and helping others in need," Jennifer says.


Anna Weinberg, 17
Francis W. Parker High School

Weinberg
Anna has performed community service at two Spanish-speaking Head Start programs - El Valor in Pilsen and Christopher House in Lincoln Park. She has spent eight years in summer camp and last year, served as a counselor for little girls. Anna also has participated in softball for seven years. She is involved in her school's drama program and is head of the Performing Arts Committee at her high school.

Anna has studied Spanish for five years and traveled throughout much of Central America, including Honduras, Belize and Costa Rica.

Why does Anna want to go to Peru? Anna says, "I think that time spent in Peru will help me develop a stronger social conscience."


Meet the CARE staff

Ruth Fuller
Writer

Fuller
An experienced journalist, Ruth joined CARE in March 2000 as a public relations consultant in CARE's Chicago office. She has studied Spanish in Spain and Mexico, and she also works as a free-lance reporter for the Chicago Tribune. This is her second trip to Peru with the CARE Youth Corps.

Wills Glasspiegel
CYC 2000 member and CYC 2001 Writer

Before applying to the CARE Youth Corps 2000 program, Wills already had immersed himself in Hispanic culture.

Glasspiegel
His travels have taken him to Mexico, Spain and Ecuador. This year, Wills will serve as a student writer to capture the Youth Corps experience from a youth's perspective. He is a senior at Francis W. Parker High School in Chicago, where he is a member of student government and the tennis team. Wills will enter Yale University in the fall.

Scott Gribble
Photographer/Videographer

Gribble
Scott is a seasoned photographer and videographer who has worked for NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, ESPN and CLTV. In January 2001, Scott launched Wonderdog Media, a company specializing in television production, documentaries and short films. In addition to his video and film credits, Scott speaks fluent Spanish and is a certified paramedic.

Mary Mucci
CARE Chicago

Mucci
Mary began working for CARE in 2000 as director of development for planned giving. A former career in education lead to her chairing the training and development committee for CYC 2001. Recent travels include Central America and Africa. This is her first trip to Peru.

Lisa Smith
CARE Chicago

Smith
As director of development in CARE's Chicago office, Lisa served as program coordinator for the CARE Youth Corps 2000 program last summer. This year, Lisa is responsible for CARE Youth Corps activities in Peru and has assisted with training, web development and public relations. She joined CARE in 1998 after working in the Mayor's Office of Program Development for the city of Chicago. Lisa has visited CARE projects in Ecuador, Peru, Sierra Leone and Zambia.
