Tanzania: Happy International Women's Day
All around the world, International Women's Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality. The theme for 2015 is ‘Make it Happen’ and it encourages effective action for advancing and recognizing women, in Tanzania, Africa and across the globe.
While the new millennium has seen some progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment, a lot still has to be done. The numerous acts of courage carried out by women and their determination to make positive changes have made contributions to our communities and countries. Although positive gains has been made the world remains unequal and African women especially face various obstacles including limited education, high levels of maternal mortality and financial exclusion, not to mention gender based violence. Across the globe women face various stereotypes and discrimination based on gender that affect their health, economic status and literacy to name a few. And if we took a moment to imagine a society where women were given equal opportunities and allowed to reach their full potential we would imagine a society that is much further ahead than we are today.
The Wezesha strategy focuses on Women in rural, food insecure households whose livelihoods depend on natural resources and climate change. We envision a Tanzania where women are empowered to realize their social, political and economic rights and together we can make a difference. As we celebrate International Women’s day in 2015, let us all recommit ourselves as CARE International in Tanzania and do our utmost to advance gender equity. Evidence shows that countries with more gender equality have better economic growth and are happier societies. Companies with more women leaders perform better. Peace agreements that include women are more durable. Equality for Women is Progress for All!
I wish you a happy International Women’s Day!
