Publication info

On Wednesday, January 29 at 8pm ET the CARE Action Network will host a special briefing call, “Women in the Arab Spring and Prospects for the Future.”

The call will feature Sherine Ibrahim, Deputy Director for Regional Programs in the Middle East and Eastern Europe for CARE.  She will share insights gathered in a recent CARE International report entitled, “Arab Spring or Arab Autumn:  Women’s Political Participation in the Uprisings and Beyond.”

CARE commissioned this report in the aftermath of the Arab Spring to understand the changing context of political participation across the Arab region.  The main findings of the report conclude that popular uprisings in the Middle East have created a complex set of challenges and opportunities with regards to women’s political participation. While there has been an upsurge of new activism by women and concrete gains made in some political transition processes, in other cases there has been talk of the 'Arab Spring' turning into an Autumn or Winter for women's rights.

Ms. Ibrahim has worked in the field of development for the last 18 years in Egypt, South Asia, the United States and the Middle East.  She is based in Cairo, Egypt and will be in Washington, D.C. for the U.S. launch of this report

Join us to learn more about women in the Arab Spring, the challenges that women continue to face in time of conflict, and the signs of hope.

To RSVP for the call, please email by Tuesday, January 28.  All registrants will receive call in instructions in advance.
