Devex: How funders are fighting philanthropy that is 'top down, closed door, expert driven'

Devex quoted Dar Vanderbeck, CARE’s chief innovation officer, and Marilia Bezerra, CARE Enterprises’ managing partner about the importance of ensuring philanthropic efforts are targeting the people most in need by incorporating local entities. CARE’s newly launched Embark program will include locals to help create innovative and sustainable solutions, which Bezerra said is a way for philanthropists supporting gender justice initiatives to partner with a NGO and efficiently make a transformation. Vanderbeck, who will lead Embark, said, “the opposite of poverty is not wealth, it’s justice, so this is really thinking about who has power, how do we give it away, how do we give it back in a way, not in the paradigm of doing well by doing good.” Read more here.
