Refugee Filmmaking Boot Camp at Azraq
What's This About?
CARE Jordan is excited to partner with leading Hollywood producers, directors, and actors on a three-day filmmaking boot camp for Syrian refugee youth in Azraq camp July 10-13, 2017. Producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Brandt Andersen, known for such films as Lone Survivor, Everest, 2 Guns, the Golden Globe-nominated Flowers of War, and the recently released Martin Scorsese film Silence, will lead the video camp and provide training along with a team of film professionals, actors and artists. Brandt and team, who are donating their time and expertise, will cover the basics of storytelling, producing, directing, filming, lighting, sound, set design, editing and acting. On the final day of training, all participants will be invited to work on a professional film set and attend a premiere of the films produced by the refugee participants.
Azraq: Home to 55,000 Displaced Syrians
CARE International has been working in Jordan since 2012 to respond to the Syria crisis. We provide services to Syrians living outside refugee camp settings as well as in Azraq refugee camp, established in 2014 and home to 55,000 displaced Syrians. There are nearly 677,000 Syrians registered as refugees in Jordan, which has a population of 8 million. The estimated number of refugees, including those who do not have official registration papers, exceeds 1 million. The Syria conflict, now in its seventh year, has resulted in the worst humanitarian crisis of this generation. More than half of Syria’s population of 11 million (as of 2012) has been either killed or forced to flee. In July 2012, there were 100,000 refugees in neighboring countries. That number has jumped to 4.9 million as of March 2017. Over 400,000 men, women and children have died as a result of the conflict.
Why a Film Camp?
The film camp will offer a dynamic and creative outlet for Syrian youth who have not been able to attend school for years and do not have significant opportunities for self-expression. They are at risk of becoming a generation with little hope and too much cynicism. The Azraq Film Camp will be stimulating, encouraging and fun, and inspire film artists of the future. CARE will build upon this experience to expand creative programming opportunities to reach more young people and generate hope and possibilities for a better future.
Brandt and his colleagues have been generous enough to donate their time and skills, but we still need help to make this incredible opportunity available to Syrian youth at Azraq. Your support and assistance will be greatly appreciated to make this camp a reality.
