Project Name:Kirumara - Creating a Fvaourable Environment for Women's Rights in Burundi
Project Description:
By the end of 2009 Care Burundi's Kirumara (Empowered Women) project will have contributed to increasing the capacity of 3200 vulnerable women from female headed households and survivors of Sexual and Gender Based violence in 5 communes in Gitega, Bubanza and Bujumbura Rural provinces in Burundi, so they can exercise their rights and overcome political and cultural barriers that impede their empowerment. Specifially the project will work with women's solidarity groups, organised around savings and credit activities. The indirect beneficiaries of the project will be 16 000 people, members of the households of the direct beneficiaries. Key activities are training women and men in prevention of rape and psychological and physical abuse, as well as identifying and handling survivors; establish or strengthen community based structure for the care of survivors; awareness raising for groups at risk of becoming perpetrators and/or victims. The project will work with local, specialised organisations that address Sexual based violence, conflict resolution, advocacy, research on coustoms that discriminate against women, and a theater group that address related issues in their presentations. The project will also make efforts to contribute to the effective implementation of UNSC Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.
