Country Description:
CARE's work in the Balkans started in 1992, when it provided humanitarian support to people affected by war. Since then, the region's population has been vulnerable to poverty, gender-based violence and discrimination, and deep community divides. CARE works in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Kosovo, with vulnerable and marginalized communities − farmers from poor areas, Roma people, and other minorities − and has a special focus on young people, women, and girls. CARE's aim is to ensure social, economic, and political rights of these groups are recognized and fulfilled, as such contributing to sustainable peace in the Balkans.
