Project Name:First Shelter Initiative
Project Description:
This First Shelter Initiative project is a partnership initiative between CARE and Habitat for Humanity International, and is intended to uplift the dignity and improve the living and housing conditions of families in severely affected areas and villages around the city of Kuito in Bie Province in central Angola by repairing, reconstructing or building their homes. The final goal is to assist and address the shelter needs of 500 families, with an initial pilot project of 100 families. This project description document defines the guidelines to be met in phase one of the project, that of pilot project to assist 100 families within the Bie province.

This project will assist 500 families in the Bie Province to repair, reconstruct or build their homes within the 2004 and 2005 building seasons (100 houses in a pilot project plus 400 additional houses). Beneficiary families will be provided technical counselling to assist in the construction of low-cost quality houses. Materials, namely zinc sheets, nails, doors and windows, will be provided to the families that fulfill the mutual labor requirements (also known as sweat equity). Families that are classified as vulnerable due to age, disability, or social status (women head of households) will be incorporated into the project so that all of the families within the involved communities will be able to benefit.
